Thanksgiving is always a time we talk about all the good stuff we have going on in our lives and I wanted to take a minute to do just that.
The most important thing I am thankful for on a day to day basis is opportunity. Now before you get all crazy and tell me that I should be thankful for my family and friends ahead of opportunity just give me second.
My family means the world to me, more than anything else. I have an incredible wife that has challenged me to become what I am today and what I will be tomorrow. I have two amazing sons that bring me more joy than I can possibly describe (they also challenge me but in a way that only a 5 & 3 year old can!). But here is the thing, none of that is possible without opportunity.
“A set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.” That is the dictionary definition of opportunity. I have been given the correct circumstances to make those wonderful things in my life happen, and for that I am most thankful. I use the 5 minute Journal (I would highly recommend it-fiveminutejournal.com). Every morning I write down 3 things I am thankful/grateful for and one of them is always opportunity. Sometimes I mean the opportunity to be a father. Sometimes I mean the opportunity to be a son. Sometimes I mean the opportunity to be a husband. Many times I mean the opportunity to choose what I want to be and how I want to get there.
You see there are many times we all feel a bit stuck, especially if you are an overworked and probably underpaid entrepreneur just starting your business, but you aren’t stuck. If you are reading this then you have probably started something or are thinking of starting something and that means you have an opportunity to make it what you want. An opportunity to set your own circumstances. Many times that “stuck” feeling comes from something in the past…something we have already been through and we know how that story ends, so we figure this one will be the same. But we have the opportunity to change the ending, to influence the outcome.
Keep in mind that the only thing we have have that is guaranteed is the opportunity. Now that we have recognized it, we have to do something about it. We have to go out and make something out of that opportunity.
Being thankful for what you have is one thing, making the most of that opportunity is another. We wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and when you get back to the hustle tomorrow (or maybe tonight after dinner…) be sure to keep the opportunity top of mind and then execute like mad to make the most of it.
